Buying Time

A man came home from work late again, tired, irritated, and stressed, to find his 6-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”
“Yeah, sure, what is it?” replied the man.
“Daddy, how much money do you make an hour?”
“That is none of your business! What makes you ask such a question?” the man said irritatingly.
“Oh, I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy.
“Well, if you must know, I make $20.00 an hour.”
“Oh,” the little boy replied, head bowed. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I borrow $10.00 please?”
The father was irritated. “If the only reason you want to know how much money I make is so you can borrow some for a dopey toy or other nonsense, then off to your room and think about your selfishness. And besides, you’re only 6 years old, and 6 year-olds don’t need money. I work long, hard hours every day to earn money for you and your mom, I don’t have time to talk about loaning you money”.
The little boy went quietly to his room and shut the door.
After about an hour, the father had calmed down and started to think he may have been a little hard on his son. Maybe there really was a reason he needed to borrow $10.00, he had never asked before for money. The father went to the boy’s room and knocked on the door. “May I come in?” inquired the father.
“Yes, Daddy,” replied the little boy.
“I have been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It has been a long, tough day and I took my anger out on you. Here’s the $10.00 you asked for.”
The little boy sat up straight and beaming said: “Oh, thank you, Daddy!” Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out some crumpled up dollars. The father seeing that the boy already had money started to get angry again. The little boy slowly started to count out his money, then looked up at his father.
“Why did you want more money if you already had some?” the father grumbled.
“Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” the little boy replied.
“For what?” said his father.
“Daddy, I have $20.00 now. Can I buy an hour of your time?”

Unfolding the Rosebud

It is only a tiny rosebud,
A flower of GOD’s design;
But I cannot unfold the petals
With these clumsy hands of mine.

The secret of unfolding flowers
Is not known to such as I.
GOD opens this flower so sweetly,
When in my hands they fade and die.

If I cannot unfold a rosebud,
This flower of GOD’s design,
Then how can I think I have wisdom
To unfold this life of mine?

So I’ll trust in Him for His leading
Each moment of every day.
I will look to Him for His guidance
Each step of the pilgrim way.

The pathway that lies before me,
Only my heavenly Father knows.
I’ll trust Him to unfold the moments,
Just as He unfolds the rose.

The Boxes

I have in my hands two boxes
Which God gave me to hold.
He said, “Put all your sorrows in the black,
And all your joys in the gold.”
I heeded His words, and in the two boxes
Both my joys and sorrows I store,
But though the gold became heavier each day
The black was as light as before.
With curiosity, I opened the black
I wanted to find out why
And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole
Which my sorrows had fallen out by.
I showed the hole to God, and mused aloud,
“I wonder where my sorrows could be.”
He smiled a gentle smile at me.
“My child, they’re all here with me.”
I asked, “God, why give me the boxes,
Why the gold, and the black with the hole?”
“My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings,
the black is for you to let go.”

Don’t Take it Home

The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet the family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands.
After opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His face was wreathed in smiles, and he hugged his two small children and then gave his wife a kiss.
Afterwards, he walked me to my car. We passed the tree, and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.
“Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing for sure, troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning, I pick them up again.”
“Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”
There is an even better way of dealing with the challenges of life – cast them all upon Jesus, Who is an expert at turning troubles around testimonies.

The Homeless Man

It was a cold winter’s day that Sunday. The parking lot to the church was filling up quickly. I noticed as I got out of my car that fellow church members were whispering among themselves as they walked to the church. As I got closer, I saw a man leaned up against the wall outside the church. He was almost laying down as if he was asleep. He had on a long trench coat that was almost in shreds and a hat topped his head, pulled down so you could not see his face.
He wore shoes that looked 30 years old, too small for his feet with holes all over them, his toes stuck out. I assumed this man was homeless, and asleep, so I walked on by through the doors of the church. We all fellowshipped for a few minutes, and someone brought up the man laying outside. People snickered and gossiped but no one bothered to ask him to come in, including me.
A few moments later church began. We all waited for the Preacher to take his place and to give us the Word when the doors to the church opened. In came the homeless man walking down the aisle with his head down. People gasped and whispered and made faces. He made his way down the aisle and up onto the pulpit he took off his hat and coat.
My heart sank.
There stood our preacher…he was the “homeless man.”
No one said a word. The preacher took his Bible and laid it on the stand. “Folks, I don’t think I have to tell you what I am preaching about today.” Then he started singing the words to this song.
If I can help somebody as I pass along.
If I can cheer somebody with a word or song
If I can show somebody that he’s travelling wrong.
Then my living shall not be in vain.
“IS YOUR LIVING IN VAIN?”

The Power of Words

I have always had a special love for words. Words have such power in them. The right words can uplift, inspire, heal, and create endless joy and love in our lives. The wrong words can depress, discourage, hurt, and bring us endless misery and pain. It is so very important then to try and choose the right words in our lives. By choosing the right words I don’t just mean saying the right words or writing the right words either. I also mean thinking the right words. It is amazing the garbage that so many of us allow ourselves to think each and every day of our lives.
In order to live a truly blessed life we must haul away the garbage and start to plant words that will grow into a garden of joy and light in our minds. Start today then to make the words in your life work for you and not against you. Do away with “can’t” and “no”. Try “can” and “yes” instead.
Say, “I can be happy, I can choose joy, and I can share love.” Say, “Yes” to life, to learning, and to growth. Begin to use words like: Wonderful, Beautiful, and Delightful when you speak to others. Find a word of praise for everyone you know and then share it with them. Look the people you love straight in the eye and tell them, “I love you.” Seek our every fantastic, fabulous, and glorious word that you can and start to use them in your life.
Words are such simple things and yet they have the power to change our lives forever if we use them right. Make the choice every day of your life to use all of the good, positive, and loving words you can every second that you can. If you do this you will find that your life will become a paradise of love and joy, that other people will become your brothers and sisters in happiness, and that God’s goodness will shine through every word you use….

Judge Gently

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” – Luke 6:37
A doctor entered the hospital in hurry having been called in for an urgent surgery.
He changed his clothes and went directly to the surgery block. He found an anxious father pacing the hall waiting for the doctor. On seeing him, the man yelled: “Why did you take all this time to come? Don’t you know that my son’s life is in danger? Don’t you have any sense of responsibility?”
The doctor smiled and said: “I am sorry, I wasn’t in the hospital and I came as fast as I could after receiving the call. Now, I wish you’d calm down so that I can attend to your son.”
“Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now, would you calm down? If your own son dies now what will you do?” demanded the angry father.
The doctor smiled again and replied: “I will say what Job said in the Holy Book ‘From dust we came and to dust we return, blessed be the name of God’. Doctors cannot prolong lives. Go and intercede for your son, we will do our best by God’s grace.”
“It is so easy to give advice when we’re not directly concerned,” the father murmured.
The surgery took some hours after which the doctor came out happy, “Thank goodness! Your son is saved!”
And without waiting for the father’s reply he proceeded on his way running. “If you have any questions, ask the nurse!”
“Why is he so arrogant? He couldn’t wait some minutes so that I ask about my son’s state.” the man complained when the nurse came over some minutes after the doctor left.
The nurse answered, tears coming down her face: “His son died yesterday in a road accident, he was at the burial when we called him for your son’s surgery. And now that he has saved your son’s life, he has run back to finish his son’s burial.”
Never judge anyone; because you may never know how their life’s journey has been or what they are going through.

You Ask Why I Follow This Jesus?

You ask why I follow this Jesus?
Why I love Him the way I do?
When the world’s turned away from His teachings
And the people who serve Him are few.

It’s not the rewards I’m after
Or gifts that I hope to receive
It’s the Presence that calls for commitment
It’s the Spirit I trust and believe.

The Lord doesn’t shelter His faithful
Or spare them all suffering and pain,
Like everyone else I have burdens,
And walk through my share of rain.

Yet He gives me a plan and a purpose,
And that joy only Christians have known,
I never know what comes tomorrow,
But I do know I’m never alone.

It’s the love always there when you need it;
It’s the words that redeem and inspire,
It’s the longing to ever be with Him
That burns in my heart like a fire.

So you ask why I love my Lord Jesus?
Well, friend, that’s so easy to see,
But the one thing that fills me with wonder is
Why Jesus loves someone like me.

The Burden – A Perspective to the Pressures of Life

“Why was my burden so heavy?” I slammed the bedroom door and leaned against it. Is there no rest from this life? I wondered. I stumbled to my bed and dropped onto it, pressing my pillow around my ears to shut out the noise of my existence.
“Oh God,” I cried, “let me sleep. Let me sleep forever and never wake up!”
With a deep sob, I tried to will myself into oblivion, then welcomed the blackness that came over me.
Light surrounded me as I regained consciousness. I focused on its source: the figure of a man standing before a cross.
“My child,” the person asked, “why did you want to come to Me before I am ready to call you?”
“Lord, I’m sorry. It’s just that… I can’t go on. You see how hard it is for me. Look at this awful burden on my back. I simply can’t carry it anymore.”
“But haven’t I told you to cast all of your burdens upon Me, because I care for you? My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”
“I knew You would say that. But why does mine have to be so heavy?”
“My child, everyone in the world has a burden. Perhaps you would like to try a different one?”
“I can do that?”
He pointed to several burdens lying at His feet. “You may try any of these.”
All of them seemed to be of equal size. But each was labeled with a name.
“Why there’s Joan’s!” I said. Joan was married to a wealthy businessman. She lived in a sprawling estate and dressed her three daughters in the prettiest designer clothes. Sometimes she drove me to church in her Cadillac when my car was broken.
“Let me try that one.” How difficult could her burden be? I thought.
The Lord removed my burden and placed Joan’s on my shoulders. I sank to my knees beneath its weight. “Take it off!” I said. “What makes it so heavy?”
“Look inside.”
I untied the straps and opened the top. Inside was a figure of her mother-in-law, and when I lifted it out, it began to speak.
“Joan, you’ll never be good enough for my son,” it began. “He never should have married you. You’re a terrible mother to my grandchildren…”
I quickly placed the figure back in the pack and withdrew another. It was Donna, Joan’s youngest daughter. Her head was bandaged from the surgery that had failed to resolve her epilepsy.
A third figure was Joan’s brother. Addicted to drugs, he had been convicted of killing a police officer.
“I see why her burden is so heavy, Lord. But she’s always smiling and helping others. I didn’t realize…”
“Would you like to try another?” He asked quietly.
I tested several. Paula’s felt heavy: She was raising four small boys without a father. Debra’s did too: a childhood of sexual abuse and a marriage of emotional abuse. When I came to Ruth’s burden, I didn’t even try. I knew that inside I would find arthritis, old age, a demanding full-time job, and a beloved husband in a nursing home.
“They’re all too heavy, Lord.” I said. “Give back my own.”
As I lifted the familiar load once again, it seemed much lighter than the others. “Let’s look inside.” He said.
I turned away, holding it close. “That’s not a good idea,” I said.
“Why?”
“There’s a lot of junk in there.”
“Let Me see.”
The gentle thunder of His voice compelled me. I opened my burden.
He pulled out a brick.
“Tell me about this one.”
“Lord, You know. It’s money. I know we don’t suffer like people in some countries or even the homeless here. But we have no insurance, and when the kids get sick, we can’t always take them to the doctor. They’ve never been to a dentist. And I’m tired of dressing them in hand-me-downs.”
“My child, I will supply all of your needs… and your children’s. I’ve given them healthy bodies. I will teach them that expensive clothing doesn’t make a person valuable in My sight.”
Then He lifted out the figure of a small boy. “And this?” He asked.
“Andrew…” I hung my head, ashamed to call my son a burden. “But, Lord, he’s hyperactive. He’s not quiet like the other two. He makes me so tired. He’s always getting hurt, and someone is bound to think I abuse him. I yell at him all the time. Someday I may really hurt him…”
“My child,” He said, “If you trust Me, I will renew your strength. If you allow Me to fill you with My Spirit, I will give you patience.”
Then He took some pebbles from my burden.
“Yes, Lord,” I said with a sigh. “Those are small. But they’re important. I hate my hair. It’s thin, and I can’t make it look nice. I can’t afford to go to the beauty shop. I’m overweight and can’t stay on a diet. I hate all my clothes. I hate the way I look!”
“My child, people look at your outward appearance, but I look at your heart. By My Spirit you can gain self-control to lose weight. But your beauty should not come from outward appearance. Instead, it should come from your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in My sight.”
My burden now seemed lighter than before.
“I guess I can handle it now.” I said.
“There is more.” He said. “Hand Me that last brick.”
“Oh, You don’t have to take that. I can handle it.”
“My child, give it to Me.” Again His voice compelled me. He reached out His hand, and for the first time I saw the ugly wound.
“But, Lord, this brick is so awful, so nasty, so…Lord! What happened to Your hands? They’re so scarred!” No longer focused on my burden, I looked for the first time into His face. In His brow were ragged scars –as though someone had pressed thorns into His flesh.
“Lord,” I whispered. “What happened to You?”
His loving eyes reached into my soul.
“My child, you know. Hand Me the brick. It belongs to Me. I bought it.”
“How?”
“With My blood.”
“But why, Lord?”
“Because I have loved you with an Everlasting Love. Give it to Me.”
I placed the filthy brick into His wounded palm. It contained all the dirt and evil of my life: my pride, my selfishness, the depression that constantly tormented me.
He turned to the cross and hurled my brick into the pool of blood at it’s base. It hardly made a ripple.
“Now, My child, you need to go back. I will be with you always. When you are troubled, call to Me and I will help you and show you things you cannot imagine now.”
“Yes, Lord, I will call on You.”
I reached to pick up my burden.
“You may leave that here if you wish. You see all these burdens? They are the ones that others have left at My feet. Joan’s, Paula’s, Debra’s, Ruth’s… When you leave your burden here, I carry it with you. Remember, My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
As I placed my burden with Him, the light began to fade. Yet I heard Him whisper, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.”
A peace flooded my soul.
Does this describe you? What burden are you shouldering all on your own that you are not willing to cast down at the feet of Jesus? When you drag your burdens with Him, instead of surrendering them to Him, they weigh down your shoulders. So, let go and let God.

Lucky

Mary and her husband Jim had a dog, Lucky. Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit they would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably someone would forget and something would come up missing. Mary or Jim would go to Lucky’s toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky’s favorite toys. Lucky always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box.
It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease…she was just sure it was fatal. She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders.
The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her…what would happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim he was Mary’s dog through and through. If I die Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won’t understand that I didn’t want to leave him. The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death.
The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but the dog just drooped, whining and miserable. But finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn’t even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap. Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn’t come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed.
When Mary woke for a second she couldn’t understand what was wrong. She couldn’t move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. Panic soon gave way to laughter though when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed in every treasure Lucky owned!
While she had slept the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement and back bringing his beloved mistress his favourite things in life. He had covered her with his love. Mary forgot about dying. Instead, she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every night.
It’s been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer-free. Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box but Mary remains his greatest treasure.
Live every day to the fullest…because every day is a blessing from God! He covers you with His treasures and His love!

Special Beatitudes for Those Who Work with Special People

Blessed are you who take time to listen to difficult speech
For you help us know that if we persevere, we can be understood.
Blessed are you who walk with us in public places and ignore the stares of Strangers,
For in your companionship, we find havens of relaxation.
Blessed are you who never bid us “hurry up” and more blessed, you who do not
Snatch our tasks from our hands to do them for us
For often we need time rather than help.
Blessed are you who stand beside us as we enter new and untried ventures,
For our failures will be outweighed by the times when we surprise ourselves and You.
Blessed are you who ask for our help
For our greatest need is to be needed.
Blessed are you who help us with the graciousness of Christ.
For oftentimes we need the help we cannot ask for.
Blessed are you when, by all these things you assure us that the thing that
Makes us individuals is not in our peculiar muscles, not in our wounded
Nervous systems, nor in our difficulties in learning
But in the God-given self which no infirmity can confine.
Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, and know that you give us reassurances that
Could never be spoken in words,
For you deal with us as Christ dealt with all His children.
